Self-Identification
Definitions:

Racialized youth (Visible Minority): Refers to whether a person belongs to a
visible minority group as defined by the Employment Equity Act and, if so, the visible minority group to which the
person belongs. The Employment Equity Act defines visible minorities as 'persons, other than
Aboriginal peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour.' The term racialized is
becoming more widely used because it acknowledges the fact that the barriers youth face are rooted
in the historical and contemporary racial prejudice of society and are not a product of their own
identities or shortcomings.

Newcomers: A person who has left another country to settle in Canada within
the last 5 years.

A person with a disability: A person who self-identifies as having a
disability which includes:
agility, hearing, mental health, developmental, intellectual, visual, motor skills, speaking,
learning.

Rural or Remote Community: Individuals living in a Census Division or
Subdivision
(CD/CSD) not
classified as a “City”. Refer to the following for a full list of CD/CSDs:

Low-income youth: A person that resides in a low-income cut-off (LICO)
household, or has identified their source of income as one of the following: Crown Ward extended care and
maintenance, or dependent on Employment Insurance or welfare assistance (i.e. Social Assistance,
Income Supports, Income Assistance). Here is information on Canada’s Low-Income Cut-Off Guidelines
based on household income:

Indigenous: A person who self-identifies as Inuit, Métis, First Nation,
urban/non-affiliated
(youth can be status or non-status).

French Language Minority Community: Either a French-speaker or French-speaking
population living outside of Quebec, where English is predominant, or an English-speaker or English-speaking population living in
Quebec, where French is predominant.

LGBTQ2+: Refers to lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, two-spirit, gender-diverse and
asexual individuals.

First-time volunteer: This experience represents your first ever involvement
in a volunteer/service project.

Boring, Boys and Girls Club of Canada, Canadian Roots Exchange, Chantiers jeunesse, The Duke of Edinburgh Award, Katimavik, mindyourmind,
